What is our MISSION?

To share friendship and resources with our Kenyan partners living on the Nyakach Plateau to help them achieve their vision of health and sustainability.

Where did we get that funny name—Straw to Bread?

Luo women weave beautiful straw baskets that we sell in the U.S. to raise money to send back to them for food. Turning STRAW into BREAD—death into life—became a symbol for our entire partnership. There is sturdy, abundant life on the Nyakach Plateau in the face of disease and desperate poverty. Grace abounds.

WHAT DO WE DO?

We’ve worked together in one Luo community in rural western Kenya since 2001 to improve:

HEALTH

EDUCATION

FOOD SECURITY

CLEAN WATER AND AIR

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT

Building a hospital, a school, a business—all of these are the fruits of our partnership, not the goal. Our relationships are comprehensive and sustainable, and our projects follow. We began as invited guests, became friends, and realized we were family. We are scattered all over the globe, but we gather in Kenya at least once a year. Our work is guided by research and by the goals of the people we serve.

What is our VISION?

This Luo community will have the sustainable physical, educational, and spiritual nourishment needed to live fruitful and loving lives, achieved through our long-term friendship grounded in the goodness, power, and love of God.
